Asda FM Essay

Asda FM is an in store radio broadcast that is played at low levels just to fill the background with sound while people drag themselves round searching for their food and other items. You could say the target audience is for all ages as anyone can be in Asda at any time, but they seem to stick to more popular music genre's so as to try to appeal to the majority of people. The station generally plays top 40 music during the day but after school ends they play Disney/other kids music to interest the kids being brought shopping by their parents. Later in the evening the station tends to play more of the what the night staff are interested in listening to as the concept of sitting in a supermarket all night is not the most exciting. You could say that they are smart in the way they design the styles of music they play to appeal to the different age groups and personalities that shop throughout the day, I mean playing heavy metal with little kids in your store isn't exactly the best choice..

ASDA FM's official job is to add musical enjoyment to the menial task of shopping for groceries. It is played at such a volume that it is only just noticeable and the less intelligent would completely miss it. Yet it fills your head with sounds other than screaming kids and aggressive parents.

I would say in general Asda FM do a good job of appealing to the masses, even if personally I don't enjoy the music they play, around one in three people probably would. It sums up the current world we live in that there is only one real option when it comes to selections for the most common music to be played in a nationwide supermarket. The notion saddens me, but I feel as though it is necessary to attract a decent level of business.

Radio 1 Essay

Being a fan of heavier rock and metal, I find myself feeling particularly sick or depressed whenever I hear a hint of Radio 1. There is nothing in the world that could persuade me to torture my ears with the sound of Nick Grimshaw or Zane Lowe, or any of the completely commercialized cancer they use on their pointless shows. The worst part has to be that Radio 1 claims to "aim to please their entire audience" by playing something of everything, yet for example on their "rock show" they had an interview with Lars from Metallica and every time they mention it, they classed Metallica as a rock band. This is not only wrong, but insulting to one of the bands that helped define modern metal as we know it.

Let's take a look at the current top 10 in the Radio 1 charts, you can clearly see that it is all the same. Commercialized vomit produced by overpaid "artists". Not to say that all of the songs are terrible, but you can clearly see the lack of diversity in the chosen music. I think if more unique music like Metal or Rock was played to a wider audience then it would be just as popular as half of the crap you hear on the radio.

1. Jason Derulo- Talk Dirty
2. Katy Perry- Roar
3. One Republic- Counting Stars
4. Drake- Hold On Were Going Home
5. Avicii- You Make Me
6. Macklemore and Ryan Lewis- Same Love
7. Ben Pearce- What I Might Do
8. Avicii- Wake Me Up
9. Jessie J- It's My Party
10. Ellie Goulding- Burn

I guess in my opinion Radio 1 targets the brainless children of the modern era and play them the same songs consistently, until they are brainwashed into believing that these songs or artists are the only "cool" preference for younger kids. I do not think this is fair in the slightest, considering we live in a country of free will and speech, to give people so little choice in their music is not only wrong but sick.

There is nothing on this earth that will ever convince me that Radio 1 is a good Radio station, unless the day comes when the ridiculous presenters, or the owner of the station, realize that there is more than one kind of music in this world, it will continue to be a festering wound, and insult to all young people using the radio to sample new music.
